The island in one minute
One road runs along the south coast from the town to Koukounaries. Everything else is a turning off it, a boat, or a walk.
That is the thing people remember. Most Greek islands are dry and bare. This one is covered in Aleppo pine right down to the sand.
Islanders give directions by bus stop. Learn the numbers for your beach and your room and you will never be lost.
The old port, the tavernas, the ferries and the late evening are all in Skiathos Town. Nothing else on the island is a town.
The island
Pine down to the water on the south coast, wind and marble on the north. Each one here has its bus stop, its facilities and an honest note on whether it is worth the walk.
Boat days
Lalaria, the sea caves and Tsougria can only be reached by water. Boats leave from the old port in the morning and come back in the late afternoon.

Behind the beaches the island climbs into pine and old stone. Two of the best things on Skiathos are up there and both are quiet even in August.

The old capital
Three hundred houses and twenty-two churches on a rock the pirates could not reach. Abandoned in 1830 when the danger passed. It is an hour on foot from the road, or twenty minutes by boat, and almost nobody goes.

Skiathos divides neatly into four eating zones, and each has a distinct character and price level.
Two harbours, a warren of stepped lanes, and the highest concentration of restaurants on the island. Everything from a €3 gyros to the island's most ambitious kitchens sits within a fifteen-minute walk. The best tables are up: the hillside and old-town-height restaurants trade a climb for a view that the harbourfront cannot match.
The resort belt along the south-west coast, strung along the main road and the bus route. This is where the best value on the island lives: family tavernas with vine-shaded terraces charging half what the harbourfront does, plus a couple of genuinely serious view restaurants above the beaches.
The closest resort areas to town — walkable, or a few minutes on the bus. Underrated for eating: a couple of properly good grills and several long-established family tavernas that survive on repeat custom rather than passing trade.
Rough roads, few people, and beach tavernas that feel like they belong to a different decade. Kastro, Kehria and the Aselinos beaches all reward the effort. Take cash, check opening times, and consider arriving by boat — for several of these, it is the easier route.
Transparency
Every figure shown under “Published ratings” — Google, Tripadvisor, Restaurant Guru — is an aggregate reported by that platform, gathered through desk research in August 2026. Aggregate scores drift constantly as reviews accumulate, so treat them as a dated snapshot rather than a live feed. Where the platforms disagree sharply, we show all of the figures and explain the disagreement in the write-up rather than quietly picking the flattering one.
The five scores on every profile — food, setting, service, value and atmosphere, each out of 10 — are editorial. They are our reading of the consistent themes across the published review record for each restaurant: what reviewers praise repeatedly, what they complain about repeatedly, and how those patterns hold up across platforms and across time. The overall score is the straight mean of the five. These are our opinions, not facts. Use them as a steer, not a rule.
Skiathos has hundreds of cafés, snack bars and beach kiosks. These are the places worth a proper write-up, plus a few locals recommend that almost nobody has reviewed. The weak ones are in here too, so you can avoid them.

Practical
A meal for two at a typical taverna runs roughly €45–70 including local wine. Fine dining in town is €28–45 per person before wine. A gyros pita is a few euros and is genuinely one of the best things you will eat.
In July and August, the well-known hillside and view restaurants need reserving days ahead — Agnadio, Scala, Marmita and The Final Step in particular. Neighbourhood tavernas will usually fit you in. Always ask specifically for a view table; it is not automatic.
Cards are widely accepted in town. Remote beach tavernas — Kastro in particular — are cash only, and phone signal on the north coast is unreliable. Take euros if you are heading out of town for the day.
Most beach and remote tavernas open around May and close in October. Several of the north coast places are weather-dependent even in season. Call ahead before driving an hour on rough roads.
The island bus runs the south coast road from town to Koukounaries and is cheap, frequent and the easiest way to reach the west-coast restaurants — several list their nearest bus stop number. The north coast effectively requires a car, a quad or a boat.
Greek dinner runs late; kitchens are busiest from about 21:00. Book early if you want a sunset table, and eat before 20:00 if you want unhurried service at the popular waterfront places.
