Out of season. International charter flights finished in mid-October, so November is domestic flights and the year-round ferry links only. Resort infrastructure is shut: beach bars, sunbeds, watersports and boat trips are all closed for the winter, and the bus season does not open again until 1 May.
The island runs on its winter population of roughly 5,000 people, mostly around the old harbour. Supermarkets run reduced hours, some tavernas open every day, and the seafront kafenia keep going. The practical asymmetry is that an evening meal is easy to find and breakfast is hard.
21 November is the reason to come. Panagia Eikonistria is the island's patron saint, this is its biggest genuinely local festival, and it falls outside the season entirely, so almost no visitors ever see it. We have one source for the date, so confirm locally before you build a trip around it.
The icon itself lives in Skiathos Town and comes home to the Panagia Kounistra monastery once a year, on 21 November.
