Resort infrastructure is shut. Skiathos runs on its winter population of roughly 5,000 people, most of them around the old harbour. Town supermarkets, the seafront kafenia and a handful of tavernas stay open and serve them.
The practical asymmetry is worth knowing before you book: in winter an evening meal is easy to find and breakfast is hard. Supermarkets run reduced hours. Some tavernas open every day.
Getting here is the bigger constraint. International charter flights finished in mid-October and do not resume until spring, so January is domestic flights plus the year-round ferry links. The island bus season does not open until 1 May.
Nothing on the coast is running. Beach bars, sunbed operations, watersports and boat trips are all seasonal, and the season proper does not begin until mid-May.
The wider shape: mid-October to April is effectively closed for tourism across the board. Out of season is quiet, not dead, but everything that happens happens in town.
Crowds: Empty. Prices: Cheapest tier.
