Tarsanas (Kehria) in full

Tarsanas has been running at Kehria (Kechria) beach on the island's peaceful northern side since 1981. Tables sit directly on the sand, the seafood is fresh, and the sunsets are, by universal agreement in the reviews, the reason to make the trip.

Access is the defining feature. The northern coast roads are rough and the beach is often best reached by boat, which adds a genuine sense of expedition to dinner. That inaccessibility is also why the review count is low — 54 on Tripadvisor — and why the ranking looks poor at #222 of 299 despite warm qualitative reviews praising great food and a real welcome.

This is a case where the ranking is close to meaningless. A remote beach taverna that fifty people have reviewed cannot compete on a volume-weighted list with a harbourfront restaurant that a thousand people have rated, regardless of which is better.

Go for the journey, the isolation and the sunset. Check opening times and how you plan to get there before you set off, and take cash.

Taverna Aligaries

A husband-and-wife taverna on a tiny north-coast bay, blue wooden tables set a few metres from the water. One of the loveliest places to eat on the island, and one of the hardest to reach.

Little Kechria (Mikri Kechria) · 8.6/10

Little Kechria Beach Shack

A reported driftwood shack on the sand at Little Kechria grilling whatever came in that morning. Included with a clear warning: we could not confirm it is a separate business.

Kastro Beach Taverna

Beneath the ruins of the island's medieval capital on the wild northern coast. Simple, fresh food in a setting nothing else on Skiathos can match.

Krifi Ammos · 8.0/10

Krifi Ammos Beach Taverna

A small family taverna above Krifi Ammos, north of Agia Eleni. Real, well-liked, and operating without a trading name we could establish.

A newly built family taverna and bar at the top of the steps onto Agistros beach, next to Elias on the north coast. New facilities, hard-won access.
