Skiathos with children

Shallow beaches, a riding centre with donkeys and a farm-zoo, boat trips that suit small children — and an honest note about what you will not find here.

The beaches that work

Koukounaries is the standard recommendation and deserves it — soft sand, clear shallow water that shelves very gently, plenty of space and full facilities, with the pine forest and protected lagoon behind. Troulos is its equal and is the only beach any source specifically described as having lifeguards daily.

After those: Agia Paraskevi, Achladies, Kolios and Tzaneria all have calm shallow bays and are on the bus route. Banana has a sandy area and beachside restaurants, though be aware of its party reputation later in the day.

The beach finder will filter the whole island for shallow water and bus access in one go.

Assume no beach is lifeguarded. Greek law requires lifeguards on designated organised beaches in season, but we could not verify which Skiathos beaches are actually staffed. Watch children constantly, and treat the north coast with real caution on a windy day — the currents there can pull a swimmer offshore faster than they can swim back.

The riding centre, which is the good one

The Skiathos Riding Centre operates on a ten-acre estate behind Koukounaries beach, and it is the single best children's activity we found on the island. It offers riding on the beach and into the sea, donkey rides for younger children, and has a small farm-zoo and a playground on site.

Hours, prices and minimum ages are not verified — contact them directly.

On the water

Boat trips are specifically good with younger children — a gentle circuit with swim stops, sometimes snorkelling and lunch aboard, and the novelty does a lot of work. The short Tsougria shuttle suits small children far better than a full round-island day, which is six to eight hours and a long time to be on a boat.

Pedalos, kayaks, SUP and banana rides run off the calm south-coast beaches. Jet skis exist and are age-restricted.

Sights that hold a child's attention

Bourtzi — short, flat, free, shaded by pines, and with a fortress story to tell. It is a twenty-minute walk that works at almost any age.

Kastro — ruins to scramble over, steps cut into rock, enormous views and a good picnic spot. But the walk in is 30–35 minutes each way and too much for small children in summer heat; go by boat instead, or leave it for another trip.

Plane spotting at the runway is free, extraordinary and genuinely memorable — and it carries a real safety warning that you should read before taking children. The full guide is here.

What Skiathos does not have

There is no water park and no mini-golf. We searched specifically and found no evidence of either on the island. Plenty of guides imply otherwise by listing generic "family activities" — if a wet-weather backstop or a rainy-afternoon standby matters to your trip, plan around their absence.

What does exist as an indoor or evening option: many hotels run kids' clubs with pools and entertainment, and the open-air cinema on Papadiamantis Street often programmes children's films.

Frequently asked questions

Is Skiathos good for families with young children?

Yes. Koukounaries and Troulos are the two standout family beaches — soft sand, very shallow gently shelving water and full facilities, with Troulos the only beach any source described as having lifeguards daily. Agia Paraskevi, Achladies, Kolios and Tzaneria are good calm alternatives, all on the bus route.

Is there a water park in Skiathos?

No. We searched specifically and found no evidence of a water park or a mini-golf course anywhere on the island, despite generic family listings implying otherwise. If a wet-weather backstop matters to your trip, plan around their absence — the open-air cinema and hotel kids' clubs are the realistic alternatives.

What is there for kids to do in Skiathos besides beaches?

The Skiathos Riding Centre behind Koukounaries is the best of them — riding on the beach and into the sea, donkey rides for younger children, plus a small farm-zoo and playground. Boat trips work well with younger children, particularly the short Tsougria shuttle rather than a full round-island day. The Bourtzi is a short flat free walk with a fortress story, and plane spotting at the runway is free and extraordinary, with an important safety warning attached.
