The three caves

Ask before you book

Two things determine whether you actually get inside, and neither is under your control on the day.

Sea conditions. On a choppy day boats cannot enter and will pass by instead. This is normal, not a swindle, and it is worth setting expectations before you pay.

Boat size. Larger excursion boats often cannot fit into Skotini; smaller caiques and RIBs can. If entering the caves is the reason you are going, ask which boat you are on. Some itineraries visit only two of the three.

Frequently asked questions

How many sea caves are there on Skiathos?

Three, all on the north coast near Lalaria: Skotini the Dark Cave, Galazia the Blue Cave, and Halkini the Copper Cave. All are reachable only by boat and all are standard stops on round-island trips, though some itineraries visit only two.

Can big boats enter the Skiathos sea caves?

Not all of them. Skotini has a narrow entrance that only small boats can pass through — larger excursion boats often cannot fit and will pass by instead. If going inside matters to you, ask about the boat before booking, and note that rough seas stop entry regardless of boat size.
